چکیده

We discuss the mechanisms by which bulk electrohydrodynamic air thrust or ionic wind generated above and directed towards the surface of a microfluidic chamber by a sharp electrode tip can give rise to surface or bulk liquid recirculation in the chamber and demonstrate various ways in which the phenomenon can be exploited for microfluidic mixing and particle trapping. In the latter, microparticles are either rapidly concentrated due to the primary azimuthal surface vortices into planar crystal aggregates or spun down in a helical swirl-like fashion to a bottom central stagnation point by the bulk meridional rotational flow. In particular, we show that this is a useful mechanism for separating red blood cells from blood plasma for miniature point-of-care diagnostic kits.

Waste water ammonia stripping intensification using microfluidic system

This paper reports the results of experimentally removing ammonia from synthetically prepared ammonia solution using a micro scale mixing loop air stripper. Effects of various operational parameters (such as: pH, air flow rate, wastewater flow rate and initial ammonia concentration) were evaluated. By increasing the pH from 10 to 12.25 the amount of KLa increased from 0.26 to 0.73 hr-1. A consi...

Remotely powered distributed microfluidic pumps and mixers based on miniature diodes.

We demonstrate new principles of microfluidic pumping and mixing by electronic components integrated into a microfluidic chip. The miniature diodes embedded into the microchannel walls rectify the voltage induced between their electrodes from an external alternating electric field. The resulting electroosmotic flows, developed in the vicinity of the diode surfaces, were utilized for pumping or ...

Electrohydrodynamic instabilities in microchannels with time periodic forcing.

In microfluidic applications it has been observed that flows with spatial gradients in electrical conductivity are unstable under the application of sufficiently strong electric fields. These electrohydrodynamic instabilities can drive a nonlinear flow despite the low Reynolds number. Such flows hold promise as a simple mechanism for mixing fluids. In this work, the effect of a time periodic el...
